GlossaryDealer gamma, defined plainly

Put Wall

A put wall is the strike price carrying the largest put-side gamma exposure in a symbol's options chain — the level where dealer hedging flow concentrates most heavily, and where declines most often meet a mechanical cushion.

What it is

The put-side mirror of the call wall: for every strike, sum the gamma of the open put contracts — signed negative under the dealer convention — weighted by settled open interest and the spot price squared. The strike with the largest put-side magnitude is the put wall. As with the call wall, the gamma weighting is what makes it a wall rather than a trivia answer: it identifies where hedging dollars concentrate, not where contract counts do.

Put open interest is heavily hedging demand — portfolio insurance and downside protection — and it clusters at round strikes below the market. The put wall is the center of that cluster: the strike around which the largest hedging obligation on the downside sits, and toward which dealer hedging flow grows as spot falls toward it. Together with the call wall, it brackets the range the chain is positioned to defend.

How traders use it

  • A downside reference on selloffsThe put wall is where declines have a mechanical cushion. Traders watch how price behaves as it reaches the wall — absorption there has ended many intraday selloffs; a clean break through it is information of a different kind.
  • Strike selection contextBuying puts struck through the put wall means paying for a move through the largest pocket of downside hedging — sometimes right, never free. Put sellers treat the wall as the reference the market itself has chosen for where downside positioning sits.
  • Half of the expected rangeRead with the call wall, the put wall frames the expected trading range for the session. A put wall close under spot, with spot also below the gamma flip, is the fragile configuration: little cushion, and amplifying hedging beneath it.

What it is not

  • It is not guaranteed support. In forced selling — liquidations, margin cascades, genuine repricing — put walls break like any other level, and the break removes the cushion rather than doubling it.
  • It is not a buy signal. A level where hedging concentrates says where declines have stalled, not that this decline will. The wall is context for a decision, not the decision.
  • It is not bearish information by itself. A large put wall mostly records that hedgers bought protection — positioning, not prophecy. The same wall exists in chains that rally for weeks.

On SPY, in practice

SPY's put wall is the downside number quoted on red mornings: the strike where the index's put hedging concentrates. The instructive days are the breaks — when SPY slices through a well-formed put wall on heavy flow, the character change underneath (short-gamma hedging adding to the decline) is why the next leg down so often travels further than the move that broke the wall.

Frequently asked questions

How is the put wall calculated?

Sum each strike's put-side gamma exposure — contract gamma at current spot, signed negative under the dealer convention, weighted by settled open interest and the spot price squared, across all expiries — and take the largest magnitude. The method, including the sign convention and its limits, is published on Profit Builders' gamma exposure methodology page.

What happens when a put wall breaks?

The cushion is gone. Below the wall, the next large strike becomes the reference, and if spot is also below the gamma flip, dealer hedging is in its amplifying mode — selling into the decline rather than absorbing it. That is why breaks of major put walls so often mark acceleration rather than exhaustion. It is a statement about hedging mechanics, not a guarantee of further downside.

Is the put wall just the strike with the highest put open interest?

No — same distinction as the call wall. Open interest counts contracts; the wall is gamma-weighted, so it finds the strike whose contracts force the most hedging. High-OI far-out strikes with tiny gamma do not make walls.

Where can I see today's SPY put wall?

On the SPY gamma page, which rebuilds every day from the settled open-interest base (the settle date is stamped on the page) and reprices against live spot through the session. The same per-ticker pages exist for all 194 symbols Profit Builders tracks.
